Engineered Wood vs Laminate Flooring: Which Should You Choose?

Wood-look flooring beside white skirting and kitchen cabinets

Choosing a new floor for your Swansea home? It usually comes down to engineered wood or laminate.

Engineered wood has a real wood surface. Laminate has a printed image under a protective wear layer.

The right choice depends on:

  • Which rooms you’re flooring, and how much moisture they see
  • Whether you want the option to sand and refinish the floor later
  • The total fitted cost, not just the price per plank

I can not praise enough just how good Rob and is team where. I just bought a house which need a number of things doing. I thought I would have to hire different people to do the jobs. But when I explaining to Rob what I was doing he organised different trades men to do the work while he was there. And every aspect of all the jobs was carried out perfectly. Thanks to all that helped.

What is beneath the finish

What is the difference between Engineered Wood and Laminate?

Engineered wood has a real wood surface. Laminate has a printed wood design beneath a protective layer.

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood is built in layers, with a genuine wood veneer on top. That real surface is what gives it an authentic look and feel.

The top layer varies in thickness between products. That thickness decides whether the floor can later be sanded and refinished.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate gives you a wide range of wood-look designs, usually at a lower material cost than engineered wood. A high-resolution photographic image of wood sits beneath a hard-wearing wear layer on a fibreboard core.

That wear layer resists everyday stains and scratches, and keeps its looks with a normal vacuum or sweep and an occasional lightly damp mop.

It can’t be sanded or refinished the way timber can. Once a board is damaged, that board gets replaced rather than restored.

Engineered Wood vs Laminate at a glance

Here's how the two floors compare on the points that usually decide a choice.

RefinishingPossible if the veneer is thick enoughNot possible; a damaged board is replaced
Underfloor heatingCompatible boards can work over underfloor heating, usually capped around 27°C surface temperatureWorks with low-temperature systems that use a suitable low-resistance underlay

Room and moisture

Where can each floor be used?

Room by room, the choice comes down to wear and moisture:

  • Living rooms & bedrooms: Choose on look and budget. Both floors hold up well here, so the decision comes down to grain and finish versus cost
  • Hallways: Laminate’s wear layer handles everyday footfall well, and engineered wood suits a hallway just as well, bringing real-grain character to a space every visitor sees first. Mats at the door help protect either floor against grit that gets tracked in
  • Kitchens: A water-resistant, kitchen-rated laminate with protected edges copes with everyday cooking spills once they’re wiped up. Engineered wood can work here too, but check the manufacturer’s kitchen guidance for that specific product, and wipe up any spills quickly
  • Bathrooms & wet rooms: Regular laminate swells if water stands on it, and conventional engineered wood fares no better. Only fit either in a bathroom where the specific product carries manufacturer approval for that use, and neither is suitable for a wet room or shower

Engineered wood suits buyers who want a real timber surface with natural grain variation. Laminate suits a lower-cost, printed wood-look refresh instead.

The whole fitted job

What should a fitted-flooring quote cover?

Laminate is often cheaper to buy per square metre, but the plank price isn’t the full story. A proper quote compares both floors on the same basis:

  • Material cost for the boards or planks themselves
  • Removing what’s there now
  • Preparing the subfloor
  • Fitting, edging and finishing

Base, height and heating

Which flooring works with underfloor heating?

Both engineered wood and laminate can work over underfloor heating. The specific product has to be rated for it and fitted correctly. Then the heat still reaches the room without drying out or shifting the boards:

  • The floor and underlay’s heat resistance controls how much warmth reaches the room
  • A common manufacturer limit caps the surface temperature at around 27°C. That’s a limit on the floor, not your thermostat or the water temperature in the pipes
  • The base needs to be flat and dry before fitting, with the right expansion gaps left around the edges
  • Commissioning the heating gradually, rather than switching it straight to full output, helps prevent movement or gaps opening up later

The team checks the chosen product against your heating system and the room’s build-up before fitting. That way you don’t need to work out the technical side yourself.

Colour and texture

Which finish and feel do you prefer?

Engineered wood’s real veneer brings natural grain variation, with a lacquered or oiled finish changing both its look and the care it needs. Laminate’s printed pattern gives a more uniform, consistent look across every board.

The team can bring samples to your home on request, so you can see them against your own walls and lighting. Fitting flooring across Swansea homes gives the team a practical feel for what works well in a room. They can draw on that when giving you a recommendation.

Care over time

How do wear, repairs and sanding compare?

Repair options depend on the surface and the thickness of the board:

  • Laminate generally handles everyday wear well, but can’t be refinished. Once the top layer is damaged, that board needs replacing.
  • Engineered wood can often be lightly sanded and refinished, but only if the veneer is thick enough.
  • Some thinner engineered products can’t be sanded at all.

Knowing this before you choose avoids an unwelcome surprise if a board gets scuffed later. The team can confirm what a specific product allows when you get your quote.
