Types of Shower Installation
Enclosed Shower Cubicle
A shower tray with a glass enclosure — the most common installation in Swansea semis and terraces. Trays come in acrylic, stone resin, and ceramic; enclosures range from framed to frameless.
Installation is straightforward and suits most bathroom layouts.
Walk-In Shower
No tray or door — just a fixed glass panel or open entry. Requires a slightly larger floor area (ideally 900mm minimum in the shower direction) and careful waterproofing of the surrounding floor area.
Popular in larger bathrooms in Sketty, Killay, and properties in Mumbles.
Full Wetroom
A fully tanked, open shower space — screeded floor sloping to a drain with no tray or enclosure. Suits smaller Victorian bathrooms well by removing the visual barrier of a shower enclosure.
The trade-off is preparation cost: tanking and screed work adds time and materials.
Over-Bath Shower Conversion
Fitting a thermostatic shower valve and a fixed or bi-fold bath screen to an existing bath. Common in 1970s Swansea semis where the bath is retained. This is the most affordable shower installation option.
For a full bathroom fitting or complete bathroom renovation, we handle those as full projects.

Swansea Properties: What Works Where

Victorian Terraces in Uplands and Brynmill
Victorian terraces typically have small bathrooms — often just large enough for a bath, WC, and basin. Adding a separate shower tray and enclosure is often impractical due to floor area.
The best solutions here are a wetroom occupying the full end of the room, or an over-bath conversion. Both preserve limited floor area while adding a functional shower.
Semis in Sketty, Killay, and Gorseinon
1970s semis often have bathrooms of 5–7m², enough for a separate shower cubicle alongside the retained bath, or a walk-in shower if the bath is removed.
The most popular upgrade here is a 900x900mm stone resin tray with a frameless hinged enclosure.
Coastal Properties in Mumbles and Langland
Strong demand here for wetroom installations with premium finishes: large-format tiles, linear drainage channels, frameless glass, and thermostatic valves with rainfall heads.
We handle all of this as part of a full wetroom build.
Electric vs. Thermostatic Showers
Electric showers heat water on demand from the cold mains — useful in properties with an older boiler or small hot water cylinder. Thermostatic showers draw from the hot water system, offering better pressure and more consistent temperature control.
We advise on which system suits your boiler and water pressure at the initial survey. Call 01792 949970 to discuss.

How Shower Installation Works
1. Site Visit and Quote
Call 01792 949970 or use the contact form. We assess the room, discuss the shower type best suited to the space, and quote itemised.
2. Materials Ordered
Tray, enclosure, valve, tiles, and any drainage components are ordered. We agree a start date.
3. Structural Preparation
For wetrooms, the floor substrate is assessed and prepared. Floorboards in Victorian terraces are often replaced with a solid substrate before tanking.
4. Plumbing and Electrics
Plumbing is routed for the new shower position. Electrical work for electric showers is completed to Part P standards.
5. Tiling
Tanking (for wetrooms) or waterproof membrane is applied, then wall and floor tiling is completed to your specification.
6. Enclosure and Handover
Tray, glass enclosure, valve, and shower fittings are installed and commissioned. Walk-through before handover.
